Super Visa Insurance
Super Visa Insurance for Parents & Grandparents
Bring your family closer. We help you meet every IRCC Super Visa insurance requirement with the lowest guaranteed rates, flexible monthly payments, and honest, personalized advice — in the language you are most comfortable speaking.
What Super Visa insurance must include
To approve a Super Visa, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires proof of valid emergency medical insurance that meets four conditions:
At least $100,000
Minimum emergency medical coverage — you can choose higher limits for extra peace of mind.
Valid 1 full year
The policy must be valid for at least 365 days from the date your family enters Canada.
Right coverage
Must cover emergency healthcare, hospitalization, and repatriation while in Canada.
Licensed insurer
Purchased from a Canadian insurer — or a foreign insurer authorized to operate in Canada.
What is Super Visa insurance?
The Super Visa lets parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents visit for up to five years at a time on a multiple-entry visa valid for up to ten years. Because visitors are not covered by provincial health plans, IRCC requires each applicant to carry private emergency medical insurance — that policy is what people call “Super Visa insurance.”
A single unexpected hospital stay in Canada can cost tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket. Super Visa insurance protects your loved ones from those costs and satisfies the government requirement in one step, so your application moves forward without delays.

The real cost of care in Canada — with vs. without insurance
Visitors pay the full, uninsured price for medical care. The figures below are typical estimates only — actual charges vary by province and hospital — but they show why $100,000 of coverage matters.
| Medical service | Approx. cost without insurance | Your cost with Super Visa insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency room visit | $500 – $1,500 | $0* |
| Hospital stay (per day) | $3,000 – $5,000 | $0* |
| Intensive care (per day) | $5,000 – $10,000+ | $0* |
| Minor surgery | $3,000 – $15,000 | $0* |
| Major surgery | $20,000 – $100,000+ | $0* |
| MRI or CT scan | $800 – $2,500 | $0* |
| Ambulance | $500 – $1,000+ | $0* |
*Covered up to your policy limit, after any deductible you choose. Estimates are for illustration and are not a quote.
Income requirement (LICO) for the host
Your child or grandchild in Canada (the host) must show they meet the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) for their family size. The table below reflects the thresholds effective July 29, 2025.
| Size of family unit | Minimum necessary gross income |
|---|---|
| 1 person | $30,526 |
| 2 persons | $38,002 |
| 3 persons | $46,720 |
| 4 persons | $56,724 |
| 5 persons | $64,336 |
| 6 persons | $72,560 |
| 7 persons | $80,784 |
| Each additional person | add $8,224 |
New for 2026: IRCC now allows a two-year lookback — the host can qualify using income from either of the two most recent tax years — and, in some cases, verifiable Canadian-source income from the visiting parent can supplement the host’s income. Ask us if this applies to you.
Figures are published by IRCC and may change. Always confirm current thresholds on the official Government of Canada website before applying.
Documents you will need for your Super Visa application
Gather these before you apply. Most delays happen when one of these is missing.
Required documents
- Evidence of the parent or grandparent relationship to the Canadian citizen or permanent resident you wish to visit (birth certificate, baptismal certificate, or other official document)
- Letter of invitation from your child or grandchild in Canada, including care and support arrangements and household size (mandatory)
- Proof your host meets the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO)
- Proof of Super Visa insurance, valid for at least one year with a minimum of $100,000 in coverage
The application form
The application form currently used is IMM 5257. Before you apply, download the document checklist so nothing is missing from your submission.

Pay monthly instead of all at once
A full year of coverage is a big upfront cost. That is why we offer approved monthly payment plans for Super Visa insurance — you keep the same one-year policy IRCC requires, but spread the premium over easy pre-authorized monthly payments.
Typically the first payment (and sometimes a second month) is collected upfront, with the rest billed monthly. We will show you exactly how the numbers work before you commit.
Ask about monthly plansWhat Super Visa insurance costs
As a rough guide for a healthy applicant with no pre-existing conditions and $100,000 coverage:
| Around age 60 | ~$1,500 – $2,500 / yr |
| Around age 75 | ~$3,500 – $5,000 / yr |
| With pre-existing conditions | +30% to 60% |
Your price depends on age, coverage amount, deductible, and health. Get an exact quote in minutes.
Pre-existing conditions
Many plans will cover a pre-existing condition as long as it has been stable for a set period (often 90 to 180 days) before coverage begins. Stability rules and definitions differ by insurer, so choosing the right plan matters. We compare options across providers to find coverage that actually protects your parents.
Refund protection
Visa refused? If the Super Visa application is denied, you can request a full refund of the premium with a copy of the refusal letter.
Returning early? If your parents leave Canada before the policy ends and have no claims, you can usually apply for a partial refund for the unused period.
